Invest Ed® Investment Minute Radio & Television Series

Topics include top investment scams and how to avoid becoming a victim, senior protection tips, common investment products and their suitability for you, choosing a broker-dealer or investment advisor, information about the Oklahoma Securities Commission, including Invest Ed® and a 35 spot radio series written for those just beginning money management. The television and radio series air statewide on select commercial stations and are available to view or download. The Investment Minutes are used as an educational resource in STARS classrooms statewide and complement the Invest Ed® My Money Handbook.

Invest Ed® Documentary Series

This powerful, award-winning series profiles real life fraud cases from the Oklahoma Securities Commission’s closed case files; portraying in detail each true case through reenactments, victim interviews, discussions with state and federal officials, and in-depth narration by actor Rex Linn. Each documentary explores the con artists’ mind-set and method in executing their scam. Visit investedok.org for details and to view clips. The Invest Ed® Documentary Series is a resource available for use in the classroom and for unbiased, non-commercial organizational presentations.

“Anatomy of a Fraud: Catching a Con in Pottawatomie County”: This award-winning documentary recounts the multi-million dollar fraud scheme carried out by William Hickman Sr. of Shawnee, Oklahoma. 28 minutes.

“Anatomy of a Fraud: The Rogue Broker” : Subtitled the Mini Madoff, this second documentary in the Invest Ed® series explores how Marsha Schubert transitioned from a once legitimate and successful stock broker in Crescent, Oklahoma to a fraudulent Ponzi scam artist. 26 minutes.

Invest Ed® STARS (Students Tracking and Researching the Stock Market)

The STARS project is a free investment education program for Oklahoma high school students. Students research investments, assess risk, set goals, create and track online portfolios, and at the project’s conclusion write a report. The required report differentiates this program from other online stock portfolio programs. STARS’ goals include teaching students how to achieve financial freedom and raising securities fraud awareness. Additionally, the project sharpens critical thinking, research, computer and math skills, provides practice in setting goals, meeting deadlines, and writing reports.

Invest Ed® STARS Summer Teacher Institute & Refresher Workshop

Prior to implementation, STARS teachers are trained either through the four-day STARS summer Teacher Institute or eight Saturday workshops offered in the fall and spring. The summer Refresher Workshop offers participating STARS teachers a two-day opportunity to increase their knowledge and share best practices. STARS aligns with the Oklahoma PASS Standards and is recognized by the Oklahoma State Department of Education as a resource for HB 1476.

The Oklahoma Securities Commission protects investors through the enforcement of the Oklahoma Uniform Securities Act of 2004; an act prohibiting fraud in securities transactions and requiring the registration of securities dealers and securities.

University of Oklahoma Outreach is a lifelong learning organization dedicated to helping individuals and organizations transform themselves through knowledge.
